introducing vivienne james
As a young girl in the theatre, travelling the world and living out of a suitcase it was important to me to make a home out of every new environment in which I found myself. One learnt quickly to create something out of nothing. A beautiful flower arrangement, a bowl of fruit artistically displayed, or a new cushion thrown onto a bed or couch may be all that was necessary to make it home but more often than not it was a complete furniture revamp. I often have a quiet smile when I think of what the reaction must have been to some of my furniture arrangements.
As with all true nomads handiwork was important as it was easily transportable so bed covers, cushion covers, and table runners abounded in varying shapes, colours and forms to adorn my hotel or theatre dressing room. Visits to galleries and museums were important as the experience could be stored for future reference and posed no problems with regard to excess baggage. Unconsciously as I travelled I was building up a wealth of information for my future as a designer.
Ideas, themes, styles and colours charged my imagination as each new country showered me with its diverse culture. It is this eclectic heritage which inspires my work, fulfills my passion for design and allows me to indulge my creativity. I love my work and I believe that shows in my design. I consider it a privilege to be able to assist others to achieve their dreams.
